BackgroundThis gene encodes a member of the CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) family of transcription factors. It operates as a dominant-negative inhibitor, forming heterodimers with other C/EBP members like C/EBP and LAP (liver activator protein), effectively halting their DNA binding activity. Implicated in adipogenesis and erythropoiesis, the protein is activated by endoplasmic reticulum stress and promotes apoptosis. Translocation-induced fusion with FUS on chromosome 16 or EWSR1 on chromosome 22 generates chimeric proteins in myxoid liposarcomas or Ewing sarcoma. Various alternatively spliced transcript variants yielding two isoforms with different lengths have been identified.
