BackgroundVarious integrin combinations such as alpha-1/beta-1, alpha-2/beta-1, alpha-10/beta-1, and alpha-11/beta-1 serve as receptors for collagen. Alpha-1/beta-1 and alpha-2/beta-2 recognize proline-hydroxylated collagen sequences. Fibronectin binding is facilitated by alpha-2/beta-1, alpha-3/beta-1, alpha-4/beta-1, alpha-5/beta-1, alpha-8/beta-1, alpha-10/beta-1, alpha-11/beta-1, and alpha-V/beta-1 integrins. Various ligands including fibrinogen, laminin, VCAM1, and vitronectin are recognized by distinct integrin pairs. These integrins play roles in cell adhesion, migration, angiogenesis, and signaling pathways. Some isoforms modulate these processes. Involved in cell-mediated matrix assembly and angiogenesis, and also implicated in cytokinesis and invasion.
