BackgroundThis signal transducer and transcription activator responds to interleukins, KITLG/SCF, LEP, and other growth factors. It recruits coactivators like NCOA1 or MED1 to target gene promoters upon activation. It mediates responses to FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3, and FGFR4. It binds to interleukin-6 (IL-6) responsive elements in acute-phase protein gene promoters. IL31 activation through IL31RA triggers its action. It regulates differentiation of naive CD4(+) T-cells into T-helper Th17 or regulatory T-cells (Treg). It's involved in cell cycle progression, melanocortin production, body energy homeostasis, lactation, and may impact apoptosis. Cytoplasmic STAT3 inhibits macroautophagy and plays a role in insulin secretion and basal beta cell functions.
