BackgroundThis gene closely resembles the v-src gene of Rous sarcoma virus. It is a proto-oncogene that might influence embryonic development and cell growth regulation. The encoded protein is a tyrosine-protein kinase, and its activity can be hindered through phosphorylation by c-SRC kinase. Mutations in this gene could potentially contribute to the advancement of colon cancer. Two transcript variants, producing the same protein, have been identified for this gene.
